| I've always enjoyed doing volunteer work. When our children were small, I volunteered with PTA and other school related programs. I believe that a person has to give something back to their community. The old saying "it's better to give than to receive" holds true for the current project I'm involved with. I've been making quilts for our local Hospice for several years. My friends, John and Brooke Flynn of Billings, MT, have donated over 40 quilts for this worthwhile project. A few months ago there was a request in our small town asking for volunteers to start a chapter of an organization called Project DJ, short for Donating Joy. The founding organization is located in another city about 45 minutes from my home. They have made over 3000 quilts and crocheted blankets since 1999! These quilts and blankets are distributed to hospitals and crises centers in our local area and surrounding towns in PA. The recipients are primarily children. Unfortunately, the need for quilts is greater than we can meet but every one helps. It breaks my heart to think of a sick, abused or abandoned child in need of some comfort. If these quilts can fill a small part of that need, then it's worth it. I'm honored to have a wonderful group of quilting friends who gathered up unused quilt blocks and sent them to me! Plus, I had plenty of blocks left over from the books I've written. If you have any quilt blocks, fabric, thread or batting that need a "home", please consider sending them to me in c/o Silver Star, Inc., 55 Saddle Lake Road, Tunkhannock, PA 18657. I guarantee that every block will be used. I have to admit that I even piece blocks for the back of the quilts too! I want the backs to be fun-looking too. Bless you for helping with this project.
